What to Wear on a First Date: A Man's Outfit Guide by Venue

The goal of a first-date outfit is not to impress with fashion. It is to look like a man who has his life in order and thought about the evening — while staying comfortable enough that you forget about your clothes entirely. Overdressing reads as trying too hard; underdressing reads as not trying at all. Aim for one notch above the venue.
The formula that works almost everywhere
- Top: a well-fitted plain shirt (button-up or a quality knit polo) in a dark or neutral colour — navy, charcoal, white, olive.
- Bottom: dark, slim-not-tight trousers or clean dark jeans with no distressing.
- Shoes: clean minimal leather sneakers, chelsea boots or loafers. Shoes are the first thing that gets noticed and the fastest way to look cheap — they must be clean.
- Layer: an unstructured jacket, overshirt or fine knit depending on season. Layers add shape to the shoulders and give you somewhere to put your hands.
- Accessories: a watch if you own one. Nothing else is required.
By venue
| Venue | Wear | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee (daytime) | Knit polo or oxford shirt, dark jeans, white leather sneakers | Suit jackets, anything you'd wear to a wedding |
| Drinks / cocktail bar | Dark button-up (sleeves rolled), slim trousers, boots or loafers | T-shirts with logos, gym trainers |
| Dinner | Button-up plus unstructured blazer, dark trousers, leather shoes | Full suit and tie — too formal unless the restaurant demands it |
| Walk / outdoors | Clean casual: fitted tee or knit under a good jacket, chinos, minimal sneakers | Hiking gear, running shoes, gym wear |
| Activity (bowling, mini golf) | What you'd wear to drinks, minus the jacket; mobility matters | Anything you can't move in |
Fit beats everything
A €40 shirt that fits your shoulders outperforms a €400 one that does not. The shoulder seam sits where your shoulder ends, sleeves at the wrist bone, and the shirt skims the torso without pulling at the buttons or billowing at the waist. If three items in your wardrobe fit perfectly, wear those — not the newer thing that fits worse.
The ten-minute check before you leave
- 1Lint-roll the top half — shoulders and chest show everything.
- 2Check nails: short and clean. Hands are visible all evening.
- 3Shoes wiped. Two minutes, outsized payoff.
- 4Two sprays of fragrance — neck and chest — ten minutes before leaving, not in the car.
- 5Breath: mint, not gum. Gum goes before the door.
- 6Phone on silent before you sit down, not after the first notification.
What to leave at home
- Anything brand new and untested — new shoes pinch and new shirts crease wrong; confidence needs familiar clothes.
- Graphic tees, slogan anything, visible brand logos.
- Shorts on an evening date, regardless of weather. Chinos breathe fine.
- Strong cologne reapplied just before arrival — the first thirty seconds set the tone.
- Backpacks. If you must carry something, a jacket pocket or a clean tote.
